Fluorite with Calcite

WE 20-3, September 2019

Location:

Weisseck, Lungau, Salzburg, Austria

Description:

This cuboid, transparent fluorite with calcite on the side, which I extracted in July 2020, is one of my favorites from this find. The purple color arises from a violet zoning along the edges about 2 mm below the surface - the rest of the fluorite is colorless. Its faces show an intense square texture with an exceptionally excellent shine. The edge length of this crystal measures 5.8 cm! Under UV light the outer violet layer radiates a fluorescent violet while the colorless area dazzles with an intense red-orange color. This piece was published in The Mineralogical Record, Eureka Supplement, May-June 2022.

Size: 6.7 x 5 x 3.9 cm
