Fluorite and Calcite

WE 9–8, 2014

Location:

Ice Cleft, Weisseck, Lungau, Salzburg, Austria

Description:

With an edge length of approx. 5.5 cm, this is one of the largest fluorite cubes from the Ice Cleft. The cubes show an extraordinary transparent green color in the outer area and a blue color in the center. The surfaces are shiny with intensive square texture. A special feature of this type of fluorite are the slightly inwardly curved cube surfaces, which let the fluorite gloss in different areas when moved. Only a small number of pieces of this species were found in the deepest area - about 25 meters from the entrance of the Ice Cleft in August 2014. WE 9–11 also comes from this small find. This piece was published in The Mineralogical Record, Eureka Supplement, May-June 2022.

Size: 14 x 9.5 x 9 cm
