Fluorite and Calcite

WE 9–17, 2009

Location:

Ice Cleft, Weisseck, Lungau, Salzburg, Austria

Description:

Another piece of another small cavity from the bottom of the green fluorite vein. In the lower part of the piece there are shiny, transparent, elongated fluorite crystals displaying multiple stepped edge growth. Across the piece is a clearly visible line where the crystals change shape. Here the crystal structure changes to an octahedron-like growth with a small cube surface at the top. The crystals that grew exactly in the dividing line show two completely different crystal shapes. The surfaces are high-gloss. Despite a bright layer just below the surface, the crystals are transparent. The small cavity yielded only one piece of this species. WE 9-2, WE 9-16, WE 9-35 and WE 9-42 also come from this green fluorite vein, but from different small cavities in close proximity to each other, yet revealing completely different crystallization. This piece was found in August 2009 about two meters deep from the entrance.
