Quartz and Calcite on Matrix
DI 2-28, March 2003
Location:
Zederhaus, Lungau, Salzburg, Austria
Description:
This is the piece that closed the second part of the cleft (see the report). By removing this specimen, it became possible to find additional beautiful pieces, such as the largest double-terminated quartz crystal from this cleft (DI 2-17). This particular piece consists of a 6 cm thick green-schist matrix that is covered with numerous shiny light-brown calcites. Three generations of quartz crystals have grown between the calcites. The smallest generation is only about 1 mm in size and grew on the calcites and the larger quartz crystals. Another generation measures about two centimeters and has grown between the calcites. The highlight of the specimen are the main individual quartz crystals. Many of them are double terminated; the most beautiful and largest measures over 9 cm.
Size: 35 x 20 x 9.5 cm
